Not sure that your indoor plants are getting enough light? It can be difficult to judge light levels by looking at a grow light alone. Too little light can lead to slow or weak growth, while excessive light may cause leaf stress or scorching.

What Is DLI and Why Is It Important?
DLI (Daily Light Integral) describes the total amount of usable light delivered to a plant over a 24-hour period.
PPFD (Photosynthetic Photon Flux Density) tells you how much usable light reaches a specific area of the plant at a particular moment. DLI takes both the light intensity and the amount of time the plant receives that light into account.
A simple way to think about it is this:
- PPFD = how strong the light is right now
- DLI = how much usable light the plant receives throughout the day
This makes DLI useful when adjusting grow-light intensity, placement, or daily operating time.

How to Use the Indoor Plant DLI Calculator: Step by Step
You can calculate your estimated DLI in just a few steps.
1. Select Your Plant
Choose your indoor plant from the calculator’s plant list. If the calculator includes a recommended DLI target for that plant, it will use that value when showing your results.
2. Enter Your PPFD Reading
Measure the light at approximately the height of the plant’s leaves using a suitable light meter or PPFD measurement app.
Enter the reading in µmol/m²/s.
For the most useful result, measure the light where the plant actually receives it rather than directly underneath the center of the grow light only.
3. Enter Daily Light Hours
Enter how many hours the grow light operates each day.
For example, if your light runs for 12 hours every day, enter 12.
4. Calculate Your DLI
Click Calculate Light Output to see your estimated DLI.
The calculator can then help you determine whether your current setup is below, within, or above the selected target range.
How Is DLI Calculated?
The basic DLI formula is:
DLI = PPFD × Light Hours × 0.0036
For example, if a plant receives 200 µmol/m²/s for 16 hours:
200 × 16 × 0.0036 = 11.52 mol/m²/day
So the estimated DLI is 11.52 mol/m²/day.
Tips for Better Indoor Plant Lighting
Different plants have different light requirements, so there is no single DLI value that works for every houseplant.
Low-Light-Tolerant Plants
Plants such as Snake Plants and ZZ Plants can tolerate lower light levels than many high-light plants. However, very low light can still result in slower growth.
Medium-Light Plants
Many tropical houseplants, including Monsteras and Philodendrons, generally perform well with brighter indoor lighting. Their exact requirements depend on the species and growing conditions.
High-Light Plants
Cacti and many succulents generally need more light than typical low-light houseplants. Providing stronger light can help them maintain compact growth.
Important: DLI Is an Estimate
The calculator uses your PPFD reading and the number of hours of light exposure to estimate daily light.
If the light level changes significantly during the day—for example, because of sunlight, clouds, changing grow-light intensity, or plant movement—a single PPFD reading may not represent the plant’s actual DLI.
For the best estimate, use a reliable PPFD measurement and take readings where the plant’s leaves actually receive light.
